Rice Cooker

Ahh, the Rice Cooker. A usually overlooked appliance that can prove to be VERY useful and even save you money. Most people don't think about the Rice Cooker because most people say they don't like rice. Yes, plain rice can be bland and boring but by adding simple ingredients to the rice, you can make it taste very good. Rice is also very filling and cheap.

Tips

  • Use a rice cooker to cook rice when possible. Otherwise, any pot will do.
  • If you like fluffy rice that is kind of dry, use 1.75 cups of water to 1 cup of rice.
  • If you like a wetter rice, use 2 cups of water to 1 cup of rice.
  • Generic rice cooking in a pot (white long grain): Bring the water to a boil in a covered pot. Add rice and reduce heat about halfway. Stir some and then let cook (covered) for about 20 minutes. That's all there is to cooking rice. A rice cooker will make this even simpler. You may have to work on the timing and heat settings. One cup uncooked rice makes about 3 cups cooked rice.
  • A quick simple way to add veggies to rice. About 10 minutes before rice is done, open the lid and quickly drop in some frozen veggies (peas, corn, broccoli, etc) and stir into the rice. Put the lid back on and let the rice finish cooking. By the time the rice is done, the veggies will be just about right. If you like veggies that are more soggy, put them in at the start of cooking. You can always steam them separate and add when the rice is done but that uses more dishes and time.
  • Use rice as a base in the main dish. Some ideas, rice with veggies (peas, corn, green beans, broccoli...), rice plain, rice with seasonings (taco seasoning, burrito seasoning, any kind of prepackaged seasoning), rice with beans, rice beans and peas, etc.
